And the award for best idiom in a motion picture goes to…PIECE OF CAKE.

Here in Los Angeles, traffic alerts are already being issued and roads are starting to close in preparation for Sunday’s Academy Awards show. It started me thinking that there should be an award for best use of idiom in a motion picture, or maybe, best use of figurative language. Maybe here at FigurativeWriting.com we can get the ball rolling on that petition.

For now, let’s focus on this week’s winner. Something that is a piece of cake is easy to accomplish. You can use it to brag, as in “algebra is a piece of cake for me,” or as a way to offer encouragement. “Riding a bike is a piece of cake. You’ll get the hang of it in no time.”

I thought assembling an Ikea chair would be a piece of cake, but then this happened.
